Cardiff vs Stoke Player Ratings

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

We Are Stoke Player Ratings after Allen hits the woodwork late – Cardiff (A)

Following a valiant performance from the Potters at the Cardiff City Stadium in a 0-0 draw with The Bluebirds here are the player ratings:

Adam Davies – 7 – Nice to see him return to the 11 after a lengthy spell of 5 months on the side-lines, commanded his area well and made a couple of good saves, a good return for him between the sticks.

Tommy Smith – 6 – Travelled up and down the line well the entire game, crossing was somewhat off in crucial moments although he was unlucky not to get an assist via Joe Allen in the dying moments of the game.

Harry Souttar – 7 – Aggressive in the air and contained Kieffer Moore well, much improved from Saturday.

James Chester – 6 – A solid defensive performance, everything that Stoke needed in a game like that.

Danny Batth – 6.5 – Returning and dawning a new black headband he put it to good use by putting his head on everything that came towards the Potters box, a good return.

Rhys Norrington-Davies – 6 – Dealt with Sang but his attacking play suffered due to this.

John Obi-Mikel ( C ) – 7 – Protected the ball well many times, put his passing to good use and looked much better with players around him to use as legs.

Joe Allen – 6 – Just not his night, gave the ball away a few times but as always battled and was unlucky not to score at the death with a header from Smith’s cross.

Jordan Thompson – 6.5 – Neat and tidy on the ball as always, played a few good passes when he got the chance and did his defensive duties, not to mention the shot he had cleared off the line.

Nick Powell – 6.5 – Should’ve scored when the ball fell to him in the box one-on-one with the keeper, but constantly battled after that and struggled to get into play after Fletcher’s departure with an injury.

Steven Fletcher – 6 – Unlucky not to score after a good save from Phillips in the Cardiff net but unfortunately had to be withdrawn early with a head injury, hopefully he’s ok.

Substitutes:

Sam Vokes – 6 – No real impact on the game, won a few headers and fouls but that’s about it, needs to end this long goal drought to come anywhere near MON’s thinking.

Christian Phelps-Norton – 6.5 – Came on with only 10 minutes to go to make his first team debut after only just over half a season and was involved in the creation of the best chance of the game for Stoke, showed plenty of pace and fight and dealt well with Cardiff’s physicality, didn’t look out of place, extremely promising stuff, definitely one to keep an eye on.

Unused Substitutes:

Angus Gunn, William Forrester, Joshua Tymon, Tashan Oakley-Boothe, Jacob Brown, Rabbi Matondo, Jack Clarke

Referee: Graham Scott – 5 – Possibly missed a few bad challenges by Cardiff and gave unnecessary free kicks.

Overall Stoke Performance Rating: 6.5 – Didn’t deserve to win yet didn’t deserve to lose, this game was always going to be a tough one but Stoke did well to come away with a hard-earned point. Always a bonus to give a youngster a debut too, congratulations Christian.
